We had subscription problems, too. My wife signed up at a kiosk at the mall, I think, for a Fri-Sun subscription. It didn't start when they said it would. We called. Got a call back from the delivery person asking for directions to our place (which is an apartment complex that must have more than a few subscribers in it). Called back with directions. Still no paper. A month or two after subscribing, we were going out of town for the weekend and didn't want to take the chance that papers would pile up (even though we had never received any), so my wife called to cancel. She was told that we somehow had Two subscriptions, which made no sense as we'd never received One paper. "Cancel them both," says my wife and tells me later that we would get a partial refund. Partial refund? We never saw a paper! Until we canceled the subscription, that is. We came home to three days worth of papers on at our front door and continued to receive papers for several months afterward. My wife would love to get the paper, but we do not want to deal with the hassle.

not another "chicken little" threat from GM. hey i've got an idea. how about those corporate egos sacraficing about 80% of their inflated salaries. i hear the rumors about the possibilities of losing the the best and brightest execs if they can't make that kind of money. my answer to that BS is, where are they going to go? this down economy is global. they couldn't go anywhere. i say let's call their bluff. make those salaries realistic with the times.

Yes Jeff...more businesses need a disincentive to starting businesses here. Ramseur will be losing yet another textile manufacturing plant most likely this week.

Maybe they should unionize...that'll showem.

As a wage earner, I am quite satisfied with my tax burden and remain thankful that my employer's tax burden is low enough that he can afford to pay me said wage because his business remains profitable.

As the wage earner responsible for keeping the books and thus seeing to it that the monthly and quarterly coupons are paid, I can tell you the tax burden on small corporations (ours has four employees) is such that it amazes me that any business remains viable.

Not only does my employer pay his own income taxes, but he pays thousands of dollars each month for state and federal income tax, double social security, and unemployment insurance. That's on top of worker's comp and health care.

Do progressives in this state actually believe that raising business and corporate taxes in a recession is a good idea?

I'd like a definitive answer from someone.

Americans on Food Stamps will keep rising in the coming months. High energy costs and rising food costs will put more strain on the American economy. Food prices are on their way up up and up.

You forgot one thing, the poor and the shop keepers may not had wanted his butt here in the the first place. (Just like Wal-mart). Instead of fixing our schools that are now falling down around our kidds, our town-without asking builds this theater. There is nothing for our young kidds to do and they end up selling drugs, fighting, and bitching about that life. You are not alone we are lauging at Randy too

Less than half of the people in North Carolina eligible for food stamps are receiving them according to study by the National Priorities Project. The participation rate for eligible low-income people in NC is 47.1% compared to a national average of 50.2%

Media Alert

From Eddie Davis

After a great deal of dialogue and positive feedback from family, friends, colleagues, and advisors, I have reached a decision about my involvement in the election of 2008. Thus, I am announcing today that I will be a candidate for the position of State Superintendent of Public Instruction in the spring of 2008. A formal campaign launching activity will occur on Saturday, October 6 in Asheville.

I strongly believe that my candidacy will bring excitement, hope, and the joy of learning to citizens from Murphy to Manteo. Using my extensive classroom teaching experiences and my advocacy skills, I will seek to reach and motivate students, parents and community leaders in order to make public education great in North Carolina. Also, I plan to use the campaign to create more respect, responsibility, and vision for the practitioners in all of our schools. I believe that my stellar 30-year teaching career makes me politically and educationally qualified to be the drum major for life-long learning for each and every student.

I will participate in the pilot program that was recently approved by the North Carolina General Assembly. This new law will place limits on the amount of campaign contributions and, thus, will make the investment into the superintendent’s contest more affordable and more equitable for regular citizens of North Carolina.

As a candidate, I will strive to serve as a positive role model for students and for all citizens. I look forward to running a clean, respectful, and issue-driven campaign.

Eddie Davis
