Med board rules on execution policy

Update: Rep. Paul Luebke (D-Durham) is calling for Gov. Easley to halt executions in the wake of the medical board’s decision.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The state board that licenses and disciplines doctors approved a policy Thursday that makes it unethical for a physician to participate in executions.

The final decision of the North Carolina Medical Board came after a unanimous voice vote and no debate.

    Yes, well, the board also said that physicians can be present and not run afoul of ethics rules. So calls for executions to be halted as a result of the board’s actions are sort of nonsensical.

    There may be good reasons to argue that lethal injections ought to be stopped, but this isn’t one of them.
