In Raleigh tonight, specifically in the auditorium of the legislature building, House Democrats are gathering for a 7 p.m. meeting to decide who will be Speaker. As reported yesterday, Rep. Joe Tolson got out of the race and threw his support to Joe Hackney. The Insider says that the race is far from certain:

Rep. Jim Crawford, D-Granville, was predicting the race would come down to himself and Hackney, with three or four ballots needed to determine the outcome. Former House Speaker Dan Blue, D-Wake, meanwhile, was enlisting key political allies around the state to call on fellow legislators on his behalf. And Rep. Drew Saunders, D-Mecklenburg, wasn’t conceding that his support was any less than that of his rivals.

Also on the evening’s agenda for those of you in the Piedmont, is a hearing of the legislative Land and Soil Conservation Commission. Stop by if you can. 7 p.m. Greensboro – Guilford Technical Community College, Auditorium, 601 High Point Rd., Jamestown. Worried about global warming, loss of forests and disappearing farms? These are the folks who will be writing legislation to try and deal with these things. Land for Tomorrow has more on the ideas.
