N&O misses the point on landfill

Really disappointed with the N&O‘s buy-in on the Hugo Neu landfill as a ray of hope for poor Navassa. You have to read 19 paragraphs before you get to the opposition under the heading “Some residents wary.” Wade should know better. This was hotly debated in the General Assembly last session. Brunswick County also fought it. Check out this post on it from this summer. And this one and this one.
This is also european car scrap, but the story makes it seem like it’s US car scrap. Europe doesn’t want it because most EU countries have regulations banning it, so Hugo turned to a US dumping ground. Even Easley, no foe of economic development, said he didn’t think the Navassa dump was a good idea when he signed the landfill bill.

I hope this doesn’t mean that the N&O is going to get behind the mega-landfills. Who will stand up for the people as they’re rolled over by the lobbying might of the waste industry?
Today’s editorial makes no mention of the sneaky zoning move, which cut out citizen comment on the deal. Nope, instead they tip their hat to the mayor:

Navassa’s mayor, Eulis Willis, is to be commended for aggressively courting jobs for his town.

Here’s the link for the citizens who are trying to stop this madness.

The N&O editorial pages and a sleazoid toxic dump have a lot in common. Maybe Steve Ford’s just looking for a little companionship?

Great report on the facts behind this story, Kirk.

Note to Eulis Willis: You could make more money in the whorin’ bidness than the landfill bidness. Or maybe you already knew that.
